In this month’s meeting, we will dive a bit deeper into the upgraded Spotlight that is part of macOS Tahoe. We’ll not only show some traditional uses of Spotlight, but we’ll show how it has been redesigned, how it has replaced Launchpad and how it can be used for Spotlight Actions. We’ll also show how you can use Spotlight to run shortcuts, and how Spotlight introduces a clipboard history for the first time (by Apple).

NOTE: VERY IMPORTANT

As discussed in our last meeting, our hosting provider is discontinuing all their Mailman-based mailing lists at the end of December. It’s an old platform (30+ years!) that still works, but they don’t want to support it anymore, and I can understand that. They’re encouraging their customers to look for more modern ways of communicating with their groups and teams.

That means that we’ll be moving to a more current method that won’t involve email for us to communicate. We’ll use an online platform called Discord. Some of you may already be familiar with Discord (or similar systems like Slack), so it won’t be much of a learning curve for you. For those of you that have never used it before, don’t worry…it’s pretty easy, and it allows us to separate our chat topics into different “channels”. We’ve already got a “General” channel, and I’ve created the following other channels: “Mac”, “iPhone/iPad”, “Buy-Sell”, and “Off Topic”. As we start to use the system, we may discover that there might be more channels to create. Feel free to suggest things you think about, and we’ll consider them.

Last month, we kicked off reviewing new features in the OS 26 collection by starting with iOS 26. We got thorough most of the features and newer ones will be released in the coming year as updates become available.

This month, we'll go over new features in macOS 26 Tahoe as well as iPadOS 26. There are some features with each OS that are unique to each and that aren't in other Apple products and we'll be sure to point those out, too.

Lots of new stuff from Apple this month including the Apple Vision Pro. This is Apple's first new product category in nearly 10 years and it's mind blowing. It's something that has to be seen and used to be appreciated. Of course, it's still in its infancy and there's a lot of growth potential but it's still a revolutionary new way to interact with your data. We'll talk about the Vision Pro and get feedback from those that have used it.

Also, Apple has released an update to iOS that offers new security features including Stolen Device Protection. We'll discuss this and tell you how to enable it for your safety.

Have you ever seen an article you read online and wanted to save it to refer back to it quickly? Or, have you ever seen an article you wanted to read but just didn't have time to read it at the time you found it? We've all been in that situation and a few apps have been created over the years to help us collect those articles to read when we're ready. Commonly called "Read it Later" apps, many have developed integration with your favorite browser so that you can save the link or, in some cases, the entire article's contents so you can read the article when you're ready. Some apps even save the entire content offline so you can read it when you're not even connected to the Internet (like on a flight).

We'll review a few of those apps at our next meeting and show you how they work and how they can sync to your devices so you can read the articles YOU want WHEN you want them.

By now, you may have already upgraded to macOS Sonoma. The first major update, 14.1 (and 14.1.1), has been released and it's pretty rock solid stable. WWDC is winding down and Apple has made some of the biggest product announcements in years. Not only have they upgraded computers and announced what's coming with new operating systems in the fall, they announced their first new product since the Apple Watch 8 years ago. This month we'll be looking at a new method Apple is using to distribute important security updates that will, hopefully, make iPhone, iPad and Mac users who have been shy to do updates do them more often and as they come out.

We'll also talk about some automation tools that are available to make repetitive typing quicker and easier. There are some built-in tools from Apple that you've had all along to do that but there are also some third-party applications that can do even more.

And, we'll spend some time answering your questions and getting ready with our guesses about what's coming up at WWDC next month. This is always one of the most exciting times of the year.

Your data is precious to you, isn't it? With so many ways to access your stuff and from so many devices, it's easy to forget where you stored everything. You do back it all up thought, right? Right? So, what method of backup do you use? If you rely on iCloud for your Mac, that’s NOT backup.

At our next meeting, we'll talk about backup strategies and what tools are available (some you already have) and how to restore and get your data in case of a disaster. Let us know what you use and maybe we'll discuss a technique that's new to you.

Continuing our discussion about saving your digital legacy, we'll spend some time showing an app that will help you document everything about your physical home and belongings. It will also help you keep track of maintenance and repairs over the years along with photos of everything. We’ll also talk about Apple Watch custom faces and configuring on-screen complications. Make your watch look different and have it fit your needs for different uses!
